Membership

ELIGIBILITY FOR MEMBERSHIP

There are three requirements for a person to be eligible to become a member of GRAC.

First, the person must be an adult Aboriginal person who has recognised links of descent to
one or more of the following Gawler Ranges antecedents:

Harry Croft, Phyllis Hart, Victor McNamara, Jean Glennie, Mary Glennie, Bill Wingfield,
Archie Yalatu, Eva Reagan, Harry Dare, Archie Eyles, Bert Eyles, Percy Davis, Dolly Eyles,
Dick Thomas, Winnie Watson, Ada Eyles, George Reid, Mick Reid, Susie Captain, Hilda
Captain, William Smith, Molly Clawton, Harry Peel, Rose O’Loughlin, Frank Dunnett,
Elizabeth Eyles, Fred Richards, Emma McNamara, Hilda Richards, Roy Ernest Wilson,
Elizabeth Miller, George Turner; or in some circumstances, to other Gawler Ranges
antecedents.

Second, the person must be a native title holder who is recognised as having been brought
up or raised as a member of a Gawler Ranges family and because of that, has come to
know and be connected with Gawler Ranges country and know and generally follow Gawler
Ranges traditional laws and customs.

Thirdly, the person must have lived in or travelled to or within the Gawler Ranges
Determination Area, and demonstrated knowledge and connection with Gawler Ranges
country and traditional laws and customs by (without having to ask permission of any
person) having done one or more of the following things:

  • taken part in meetings and gatherings within the Gawler Ranges Determination Area;
  • taken part in ceremonies and cultural activities within or relating to the Gawler Ranges
    Determination Area;
  • put up shelters within the Gawler Ranges Determination Area;
  • hunted, gathered, prepared or cooked bush food, medicine or other resources within
    the Gawler Ranges Determination Area;
  • distributed or exchanged bush food, medicine or other resources hunted, gathered,
    prepared or cooked within the Gawler Ranges Determination Area;
  • taken part in activities to maintain and protect Aboriginal heritage sites within the
    Gawler Ranges Determination Area;
  • taken part in activities to maintain and protect the natural environment within the
    Gawler Ranges Determination Area;
  • taught or passed on knowledge of language, culture, heritage and traditions relating to
    the Gawler Ranges Determination Area to other Gawler Ranges descendants (by birth
    or adoption).
